Waverley Abbey - Yew Tree - HistoricVR - Photogrammetry Reconstruction

This Majestic ancient yew tree grows from the ruins of Waverley Abbey, the first Cistercian abbey in England. The yew was crowned Woodland Trust UK tree of the year 2022 and will represent the UK in the European tree of the year competition.

The gnarled roots are intertwined with a small remaining section of the southeast section of the chapel of the main church. The Abbey was suppressed as a result of Henry VIII’s dissolution of the monasteries in 1536 and assuming it began growing shortly thereafter, this would make the tree almost 500 years old.

During that project I was responsible for post processing aspects - scan cleanup, reopology, UV, geometry + texture reconstruction and geometry reprojection to degree that allows wide range of decimation. Additionally to typical post processing works was to trim branches in a way that foliage artist could easy recreate foliage part of model in SpeedTree - flat cut with open geometry.

For more details about photogrammetry capture, please check HistoricVR profile, and for details about foliage recreation check Sorana-Elena Corbu.
